On our two Disney Wonder Alaska cruises, useful layers and binoculars earned their space in our luggage. Unlike tropical cruises, Alaska requires thoughtful packing. The weather changes quickly, excursions are more active, and traveling with kids means you’ll need to be ready for everything from dining in the ship’s restaurants to hiking near glaciers. What we actually wore on our two Disney Wonder Alaska cruises
We sailed with our children in 2024 and 2025, once in May and once in June, and we overpacked. The clothes we reached for were T-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, jeans, comfortable pants, joggers and leggings. A light jacket was useful, with a heavier jacket needed occasionally. I would focus on layers that work together rather than a separate outfit for every possible forecast.
Our first glacier day was misty and overcast; the second was sunny and felt hot. That contrast is why I would still bring weather protection and check the forecast for each port. Inside Passage weather varies, even when you sail in the same part of the season.
Binoculars absolutely earned their space. We used them with Paisley and Parker in the room, on the verandah and on the top deck. Keep them accessible rather than buried in a suitcase. My Alaska family trip review explains how we used that unplanned viewing time.

Alaska’s climate is famously unpredictable. You might wake up to misty rain, enjoy sunshine by midday, and need a jacket again by evening. That’s why layering is the secret to staying comfortable. And when you add kids, excursions, and shipboard activities into the mix, the right packing strategy helps you handle changing temperatures without carrying an outfit for every forecast.
On my most recent Disney Alaska cruise, I quickly learned that being prepared with the right gear made all the difference — from cozying up on deck while watching whales to dressing up for dinner. We still brought more clothing than we needed, which is why I now focus on versatile layers.

The foundation of every Alaska cruise packing list for families starts with layering.
- Base Layers: T-shirts and long sleeves; add thermal layers if your forecast or excursion calls for them
- Mid Layers: Cozy fleece jackets or wool sweaters
- Outer Layers: A waterproof rain jacket; rain pants are useful for wet outdoor excursions, not a requirement for every family
- Casual Wear: Long sleeves, t-shirts, comfortable jeans or pants
- Dining Room Attire: Dresses, button-downs, slacks, polos, khakis
- Robes: Optional for verandah time; skip a bulky robe if you will be comfortable in your other layers
Pro Tip: Cruise ships can feel warm indoors, so bring layers that are easy to carry in a daypack.
Footwear for Onboard & Excursions
- Excursion shoes: Choose footwear for your booked activities. Hiking boots are useful for trails, but not essential for every port day
- Comfortable sneakers for shipboard walking and casual port days
- Slippers for the stateroom and verandah views
- Tennis shoes for active port days or exercising
Tip for families: If you’re bringing kids, waterproof shoes are a lifesaver on rainy port days.
Accessories to Stay Comfortable
- Warm hats, gloves, and scarves
- UV-protective sunglasses and sunscreen (yes, even in Alaska)
- Binoculars for spotting wildlife
- Swimsuits for onboard pools and hot tubs
- Sleep masks to combat long daylight hours
If your family loves photos and wildlife spotting, add a small dry bag or waterproof phone pouch to your daypack so you can keep devices protected on rainy port days and glacier excursions.

FAQ: Alaska Cruise Packing for Families
Q: Do I need formal clothes?
While Alaskan cruises are generally more casual, Disney Cruise Line recommends formal or semi-formal attire on those themed nights, and dress-casual with a polished look is also acceptable. A nice dress or a collared shirt and slacks are perfect. For the dining rooms, casual wear is accepted — but I always feel most comfortable in a nice dress or polished outfit.
Q: Should we bring binoculars?
Absolutely. They’re essential for whale watching and scanning shorelines for bears and eagles — and kids LOVE spotting wildlife this way. Bonus tip: bring a small tripod for easy verandah viewing.
Q: Is layering really necessary?
Yes — it’s the best way to stay comfortable all day. You might peel off layers in the sun and bundle up again by afternoon.
Q: Can kids in swim diapers use the pools?
On Disney Cruise Line, swim diapers are not permitted in pools, hot tubs, spas, or waterslides. Kids who are not toilet trained are welcome in the children’s splash zones and wet play areas where swim diapers are allowed.
Q: What items are prohibited onboard?
Disney Cruise Line has a prohibited items list that includes items such as irons and candles due to fire safety rules, plus other restricted items. If you’re unsure about an item, check the current Disney Cruise Line prohibited items policy before you sail.
Q: Do I need sunscreen in Alaska?
Yes! SPF 30+ helps protect against sun and glacier reflections. Hats help too.
